Splash safely this summer with our beachgoers guide

The perfect place to avoid the sweltering heat and muggy afternoons for pups and people alike is a dip in the ocean. If you’re planning to hit the sand with your furry friend for the first time, we have a few tips to ensure a paw-sitively fantastic time. With our top 9 tips and tricks for taking your pup to the beach, you will be ready to unleash some seriously refreshed energy with your furry friends.

1.Unleash the fun at a dog-friendly beach.
Before your pooch makes a splash, always double-check the beach’s rules and regulations! If you’re local to The Shire, there are stacks of different spots to enjoy. Click here to find out more.

2.You might doggy paddle but can your dog?
Just like us, some dogs are born to swim (fearless Labs, we’re looking at you), while others could take it or leave it. If your pooch doesn’t dive in, don’t be disappointed!
While dogs are still learning to swim, it’s natural to be apprehensive. Our tip is to start slowly and calmly and with some gentle encouragement, your pup will be embracing their inner mer-dog in no time.

3.Slow down for maximum fun
Whether at the beach or anywhere outdoors, the key to enjoying hours of fun is rest and refreshments! Keep cool beverages handy and make sure to substitute the sun for shade, especially during the hottest parts of the day.

4.Steer clear of choppy water
Rolling waves might be too much for some pups, but dog life vests can bridge that gap. Not only will it keep them safe from rough currents, but you’ll also enjoy their company knowing they’re fully protected. If you’re a bit of a self-confessed fashionista, don’t worry; these buoyant cuties come in all sorts of head-turning designs.

5.H20, don’t add salt.
While gulping up good gold H20 is a must, the same does not apply for salt water. While pooches may try quenching their thirst with salt water, it’s not great for their health. You may also want to thank us for avoiding the fun that comes after a sore tummy…

6.Stay sun protected
Pups can get sunburnt, too, especially if they have delicate skin or a lighter coat. Avoid leaving them out in the peak of sunlight (10 am – 4 pm), and make sure to stock up on pet sunscreen for their ears and nose as these areas are most vulnerable! If you’re feeling adventurous, try a dog shirt for maximum cover and style.

7.Keep a look out for dangerous items
It’s not all sweet sunshine and squeaky toys; from broken glass and coral to hooks lurking in the depths, you’ll want to be aware of several potential hazards. Another culprit is hot sand – protect those paws with some booties or stick them close to the shoreline so waves lap at their feet!

8.Rinse well
Keep your canine companion healthy, happy and clean after a day at the beach. Give them a rinse before you return home to prevent irritation from pesky sand or salt – this will also save your car’s interior! With just one quick splash, they’ll smell sweet (and free of those oceanic germs!), so everyone can enjoy their journey home.

9.Pick up that poop
A simple solution, such as packing poop bags, can prevent water contamination and keep wildlife safe. Together you two will have endless fun without any of those stinky consequences!

Let summer be the time to make some paw-sitively memorable moments with your
four-legged friend! Pack a beach bag and head for the shoreline to embrace this beautiful season. For more tips on how to keep your pooch cool this summer, read our next blog here.
